Fishing floats are normally used when one is float fishing. The float which is also called the “bobber” serves as an indicator to catch fish. This is because the float moves in different ways or sinks when a fish is on the line and pulls it under water. Whenever a float disappears, then a fish has been caught. Floats are available in many shapes and sizes but the size of the float should be big enough in order to float the bait. Choosing the right type of float largely depends on the types of fishing you want to engage in. A float should glide on the surface of the water smoothly. You may notice occasional stuttering of the float which normally occurs when the bait hits a rock.

The main types of floats are the Waggler, the Stick float, the Pole float and the Avon float. They are used for different techniques and different waters.

The Waggler is a thin tube of plastic and is the most common float. It is attached to the line at its bottom by threading the fishing line through it. It may be locked in one place or left to freely move along the line. This of course is entirely up to you. This type is used for any form of fishing and is also usable in fast or slow, deep or shallow fishing areas. Of all the types of floats available, the waggler has the most varied design.

The Stick float is ideal for river fishing. These floats are placed lengthways along the fishing line. The bottom should face the hook end. You may use silicone rubber bands to hold the float in place on the line.

The Pole float, as the name suggests, is suitable for float fishing using a pole. The float is attached to the line which is then attached to the bottom of the fishing pole. Pole floats are used to fish in most fishing venues.

The Avon float has an oval shaped hollow near the tip. This enables it to be cast further and is most suitable for fishing in slow-moving waters.

As mentioned before, the float works by indicating when a fish has picked up the bait on the hook. Whenever this happens, the float moves. However, you should not attempt to pull the line in until the float has disappeared under the water.

There are several different movements to indicate what is going on below the surface. Whenever the float moves side to side, the fish is most like moving with the bait in its mouth. If the floats make a steady slide in the water, the fish has picked up the bait and is moving in one direction. If you notice that the tip of the float dives beneath the water, the fish is swimming off.

Now that it is understood what float fishing really is and the purpose floats serve, have a happy fishing adventure and a big catch!
